Badge People Theme
Enhancing Employee Engagement and Recognition with Badge People Theme
What Is Badge People Theme?
a platform that to celebrate achievements that go beyond the expected scope. It provides a tangle and customizable way to acknowledge outstanding effort to enhance the employee engagement and promote a culture of recognition and growth at Meta.
Project Overview
Here is my project overview. Im the product designer in this project, and there’re 4 engineers, 1 user researcher, 1 pm and 1ds.
Why we need Badge People Theme?
In today’s business world, valuing contributions beyond the usual job description is crucial. Employee having some hard times to ensure their contributions are noticed and appreciated by peers and management. Meta Corporation saw this and introduced the “Badge People Theme” platform to acknowledge such efforts.
Problem Statement
According to the user researcher, the user researcher provided, we’re facing some challenging and pain points.
Employee Engagement Issues
- Inadequate engagement in roles.
- Difficulty in motivating beyond job duties.
Unrecognized Contributions
- Exceptional efforts beyond job roles not acknowledged.
- Overlooking efforts exceeding expectations.
Values-Aligned Recognition Gap
- No structured system for valuing aligned behaviors.
- Neglecting employees’ value-driven actions.
Limited Skill Development Emphasis
- Insufficient focus on skill enhancement.
- Neglected personal and professional growth chances.
What are the key goals we try to apply in our design?
According to the pain points from the user research, it’s clearly to show there’re 3 goals we need to improve:
Enhance Employee Engagement
Boost employee morale and motivation by acknowledging achievements and contributions in a tangible and customizable way.
Promote Values-Aligned Recognition
Reinforce and celebrate behaviors that align with Meta's core values.
Encourage Skill Development
Incentivize continuous skill development for personal and professional growth.
User Persona
Based on all the pain points and key goals, I created a user persona name Alex, he’s software engineer and having some troubles on:
- how to balance his daily tasks with pursuing skill development opportunities.
- how to ensure his contribution are noticed and appreciated by peers and management.
- How to find opportunities to contribute to the company’s community.
User Journey
Based on the persona, I created a user journey to help me better defining what kind of features should be designed in badge people theme. The journey started with:
Awareness–Exploration–Submission–Badge Apporval Process–Recognition and Engagement–Skill Development–Continuous Engagement–Impact on Community
User Flows & Wireframes
Actually the user journey could be simplify to 4 different section.
Exploration
A platform to see what’s going on and what kind of badges earned by peers.
Showcase
A place to display your badge achievements.
Submission
The feature “request badge” is for the employee to request a badge.
Badge Status
A feature to track the badge status.
I also created a high fidelity prototype and share with the stakeholders during the team meeting. Got lots of instructive design implements.
User Test criteria
Test Participants: 20 employees
Roles: Diverse representation from various departments
Experience Levels: Ranged from junior to senior employee
Test Methodology:
Participants were given access to the Badge People Theme platform for a period of two weeks. They were encouraged to explore the platform’s features, earn badges, and provide feedback on their experience. After the testing period, participants took part in individual interviews to discuss their interactions, impressions, and perceived outcomes.
How to measure success?
- Increased Engagement: Notable improvements in engagement scores after platform implementation.
- Recognition Culture: Active participation in recognizing peers’ contributions fostered a culture of appreciation.
- Professional Growth: Participation in skill development programs increased, leading to enhanced skill sets.
User Test Results
User Preference Test / Implementation
I got lot of insightful feedback from the participants, here are some of adjustments i made.
The original one is no indication for the steps, it looks unclear for what is next. And my new design is adding the steps to indicate what’s going on and if the user would like to revise some info in the steps, he/she could modify it anytime.
2. The second one I share is the CTA”view in badge library” in the profile card is an important access to connect the all badges, but if it keep placing in the profile card, it’s hard to notice.
Challenges and Lessons Learned
- Clear Criteria: Clear badge criteria prevented confusion in submissions.
- Efficient Process: Balancing efficiency and engagement in the approval process.
- Objective vs. Subjective: Finding the balance between measurable and subjective contributions.
